Grace doesn’t play by the rules

Bono-genade

Who can understand God’s Grace? Who can fathom its depth? Who can stretch as far as it can?  Who can know what it is going to do? Who can plan on it showing up?

On one hand, there is cause and effect; sowing and reaping; an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth; truth and consequences; every action and its reaction; even karma. We understand these principles; they seem to be built into the framework of the universe. We can count on them working. And then along comes Grace and cancels them all. What?

Grace is reckless. Law has to abide by the rules; Grace does what it wants. Grace has no rules. Law teaches you a lesson; grace teaches you love. One carries the sentence; the other grants the pardon.

We expect to get paid what we deserve. We signed a contract. We had an agreement. And in the end, we receive more than what we agreed on. We worked for an hour and got paid for a day.

We are the child waiting for the spanking, and, lo and behold, we get picked up and loved. We are expecting to open the final notice; instead, it reads “Paid in Full.”

We had an Old Covenant; it’s been replaced by a new one. It’s a good thing, because we broke the old one a long time ago.

“Grace” by Bono of U2

Grace, she takes the blame
She covers the shame
Removes the stain
It could be her name
Grace, it’s the name for a girl
It’s also a thought that could change the world
And when she walks on the street
You can hear the strings
Grace finds goodness in everything

Grace, she’s got the walk
Not on a ramp or on chalk
She’s got the time to talk
She travels outside of karma, karma
She travels outside of karma
When she goes to work
You can hear the strings
Grace finds beauty in everything

Grace, she carries a world on her hips
No champagne flute for her lips
No twirls or skips between her fingertips
She carries a pearl in perfect condition
What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark no longer stings
Because Grace makes beauty
Out of ugly things
Grace finds beauty in everything
Grace finds goodness in everything
