Paranoia at the polls

th-9

I understand the dilemma facing many of our Catch members this November. “Who to vote for?” or should we say, “Who to vote against?” Never in the history of American politics have there been two more disliked candidates to choose from, even from one’s own party. I’ve been thinking about this, and though I am not a political expert, nor do I have the last word on the election, I do have some thoughts that may ease your pain a little bit.

First, we are not electing a dictator. This is America, and we have a proven system of government that has served us amazingly well for 240 years with relatively few changes from what its original architects conceived. Once everything is in place there is very little one person can do unilaterally in our government even as the President. Just ask Barack Obama.

Second, it’s only four years, and if it really gets bad, we can impeach him or her.

Third, you don’t have to vote for either one of the main candidates. There are third parties and write-ins. You might say that’s just throwing your vote away, but it’s not. It’s still a vote. It’s your vote, and it’s your privilege. Maybe this time you vote by principle versus what’s practical.

Fourth, it’s only the president of one nation among many we’re talking about. It’s not the kingdom of God. We are not electing somebody to run the kingdom of God. Nor are we electing someone to run a Christian nation. This is not, nor has it ever been, a Christian nation. God’s kingdom is something else entirely, and no one messes with that. God’s kingdom is running right on track; it hasn’t skipped a beat, nor is God wringing His hands over this election.

Which takes us to the final part to remember: God is in control. We read every day how this and that have affected the polls. The media presents it as the future of the world teetering on the whim of the voters. The Presidential debate turned it one way, the Vice Presidential debate turned it another. Where will it go next? What one thing is going to tip the scale? Nonsense. God sets up rulers and takes them down. He is totally in charge here. Nothing will happen outside of His will. He knows who the next President of the United States will be, and, most importantly, He knows why, because it’s all fitting into His plan.

Truer words were never spoken! I have said that we are in some ways much like God’s chosen people in that our nation ad a whole and government had turned its back on God and Christian principles and we may be turned over to a totally depraved leader like Nebuchadnezzar. It is, however, as you said – part of God’s great plan and HIS WILL IS NEVER THWARTED!! God is love and He will prevail! Praise HIS glorious name!! Lord bless you and Marti! Martha

This is some of the wisest advice yet on the election — or any political campaign, for that matter. And as you rightly point out, if either of them tries to implement a harebrained* scheme like, oh, building a wall along the Mexico border, the idea will still have to get past Congress.
*(I apologize to any hares who might be reading this.)

Thank you John for your concise perspective. We will overcome by the Blood of the Lamb.!!!!! We HAVE WON THIS WAR!!!!!!!!!

This post and, significantly these days, its comments, all officially pass the the grace and truth test. And that’s coming from a harebrain. Bless all.

John, I agree with all those who agree with you in the comments made. Thank you for a very apt perspective. Your advice is incredibly wise.

God’s first choice for an Israelite king was Saul. A man a head taller than all the people. He had presence and looked strong and capable. We all know what happened to him. God looks in the heart, and chose David next. First he gave Israel what they wanted and then He chose who He wanted…..a man after His own heart. Which of the two present day candidates will God chose this time? A David a man after his own heart, or a Jehu who was to purge Israel of the house of Ahab and Jezebel? Time will tell.

As usual, you have the main thing – God – right. Today, we seem to be in a sky-is-falling mode; everything (even clowns) are considered suspect. However, keeping God 1st keeps everything in its proper perspective; behind Him. One thought regarding the election, especially when both candidates are so unappealing, would be to learn the basics about each party and vote for a party vs voting for an individual. Party platform information is readily available. This way, you could at least see something about how the ideal that each candidate supposedly represents is being portrayed.

Amen to this: “God is in control”

  8. TimLogan says:

I could not agree more God is in control as Paul said God appoints all rulers nothing suprises Him we must never lose sight of the fact that we are here first and foremost to advance the Kingdom of God. all the rest is just small stuff so why sweat it?
